10 Commandments

The Ten Commandments, also known as the Decalogue, are a set of ethical and religious principles given by God to Moses on Mount Sinai, as recorded in the books of Exodus and Deuteronomy in the Hebrew Bible (Old Testament). They serve as a cornerstone of Judeo-Christian morality and have significantly influenced legal and ethical systems around the world. While interpretations and applications vary, the core tenets remain remarkably consistent.

The First Four: Relationship with God

  1. “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. You shall have no other gods before me.” This commandment emphasizes monotheism, declaring that the Israelites (and, by extension, believers) should acknowledge and worship only the one true God who delivered them from bondage. It prohibits the worship of other deities or idols, establishing God’s unique authority and preeminence.
  2. “You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments.” This commandment builds upon the first by forbidding idolatry. It prohibits the creation and worship of graven images, not because God is physically threatened, but because such actions represent a misdirection of worship and a potential corruption of faith. The concept of God as “jealous” underscores the importance of exclusive devotion.
  3. “You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.” This commandment addresses the reverence and respect due to God’s name. It forbids using God’s name in vain, cursing, or making false oaths. It emphasizes the power and sanctity of the divine name and the importance of speaking of God with reverence. It extends to honoring God in speech and action.
  4. “Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns. For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.” This commandment sets aside a specific day for rest and worship. It commemorates God’s rest after creation and emphasizes the importance of taking time for spiritual reflection and renewal. It also acknowledges the right to rest for all, including servants and animals, promoting social justice.

The Last Six: Relationships with Others

  1. “Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you.” This commandment underscores the importance of respecting and caring for one’s parents. It recognizes the foundational role of family in society and the obligation children have to honor those who gave them life and nurtured them. It also implies respecting authority and upholding social order.
  2. “You shall not murder.” This commandment prohibits the unlawful killing of another human being. It affirms the sanctity of human life and the inherent value of each individual. It serves as a fundamental principle of justice and a cornerstone of civilized society.
  3. “You shall not commit adultery.” This commandment prohibits sexual relations outside of marriage. It upholds the sanctity of marriage and the importance of fidelity and commitment within the marital bond. It also protects the stability of families and the well-being of children.
  4. “You shall not steal.” This commandment prohibits taking what belongs to another without permission. It protects property rights and upholds the principles of honesty and fairness. It also underscores the importance of respecting the possessions and livelihoods of others.
  5. “You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.” This commandment prohibits lying or bearing false witness against another person. It underscores the importance of truthfulness and integrity in legal proceedings and in all interactions with others. It protects individuals from unjust accusations and the harm caused by dishonesty.
  6. “You shall not covet your neighbor’s house. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his male or female servant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.” This commandment addresses the root of many sins by prohibiting covetousness, the desire for what belongs to another. It emphasizes the importance of contentment and gratitude and warns against the destructive power of envy. By controlling one’s desires, one can avoid many other transgressions.

In essence, the Ten Commandments provide a moral framework for a just and righteous life, focusing on both our relationship with God and our relationships with one another. They continue to be a source of guidance and inspiration for individuals and societies striving to live in accordance with God’s will.
