His performances for FC Emmen were consistently strong, showcasing his growing maturity and ability to handle the pressure of top-flight football. He demonstrated impressive agility for a goalkeeper of his size, making crucial saves and becoming a vital asset to the team.
His performances in the Eredivisie attracted the attention of clubs abroad, and in July 2021, Scherpen made a move to the English Premier League, signing for Brighton & Hove Albion. The transfer was seen as a significant step in his career, providing him with an opportunity to test himself in one of the most competitive leagues in the world.
While opportunities at Brighton’s first team were limited initially, Scherpen gained valuable experience training alongside established goalkeepers. To further his development and gain consistent playing time, he was loaned out to KV Oostende in Belgium during the 2022-2023 season. There, he continued to hone his skills and gain vital match experience. In January 2024, he was loaned to SK Sturm Graz, providing an opportunity to play in the Austrian Bundesliga and experience a different footballing environment.
Scherpen has also represented the Netherlands at various youth levels, highlighting his recognition as a promising talent within the national team setup. He is considered a player with significant potential for future growth. His height, coupled with his agility and developing decision-making skills, positions him as a goalkeeper to watch. His loan spells are strategically designed to give him the playing time and experience necessary to become a top-level goalkeeper in the future.
