Christian Alberto Cueva Bravo, often known simply as Christian Cueva, is a Peruvian professional footballer who currently plays as an attacking midfielder for Al-Fateh and the Peru national team. He’s a player known for his flair, dribbling skills, and ability to create scoring opportunities.
Born in Trujillo, Peru, Cueva began his professional career with Universidad San Martín in 2008. He quickly gained attention for his technical abilities and vision, earning him a move to Universidad César Vallejo in 2012. His performances continued to improve, attracting interest from abroad.
Cueva’s international career has been significant. He’s been a key member of the Peruvian national team since making his debut in 2011. He played a crucial role in Peru’s Copa América campaigns, helping them reach the semi-finals in 2011, 2015, and 2019. However, it was the 2018 FIFA World Cup that cemented his place in Peruvian football history. After a 36-year absence from the tournament, Cueva was instrumental in Peru’s qualification. Although their campaign wasn’t ultimately successful, his presence on the world stage highlighted his talent to a global audience.
At the club level, Cueva has had a somewhat nomadic career. Following spells in Peru, he ventured to Europe, joining Rayo Vallecano in Spain. His time in Spain was short-lived, and he subsequently returned to South America, playing for Unión Española in Chile. He then had a stint with Toluca in Mexico, where he showed flashes of brilliance but struggled for consistency.
A move to São Paulo in Brazil was seen as a significant step in his career. He enjoyed a relatively successful period with the club, showcasing his creativity and contributing with goals and assists. However, disciplinary issues and inconsistency again plagued his time there, leading to his departure.
Following São Paulo, Cueva moved to Krasnodar in Russia and later had loan spells with Santos and Pachuca. Currently, he plays for Al-Fateh in Saudi Arabia. While he has consistently demonstrated his skill and potential, Cueva’s career has been marked by issues of consistency and off-field behavior, hindering him from truly reaching his full potential.
Despite these challenges, Cueva remains a popular figure in Peru. His skill on the ball, ability to unlock defenses, and contributions to the national team have endeared him to fans. He is often referred to as “Aladino” (Aladdin) due to his magical touch and ability to conjure up moments of brilliance.
