Joey Laleggia

Joey LaLeggia is a Canadian professional ice hockey defenceman currently playing for EHC Red Bull München in the Deutsche Eishockey Liga (DEL). Known for his offensive prowess and strong skating ability, LaLeggia has carved out a notable career spanning multiple leagues and continents.

Born in Burnaby, British Columbia, LaLeggia developed his hockey skills in the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL) with the Penticton Vees and the Vernon Vipers. His impressive performances earned him a scholarship to the University of Denver, where he played for the Pioneers in the National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC). During his four seasons with Denver, LaLeggia consistently showcased his offensive talent, leading the team in scoring amongst defensemen and earning multiple All-American honours. He was also named NCHC Offensive Defenseman of the Year twice, solidifying his reputation as a dynamic and impactful player.

LaLeggia was drafted by the Edmonton Oilers in the fifth round of the 2012 NHL Entry Draft. After graduating from Denver, he signed with the Oilers and began his professional career within their organization, primarily playing for their American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, the Bakersfield Condors. While he displayed his offensive capabilities in the AHL, he also worked on developing his defensive game to better suit the demands of the NHL.

He made his NHL debut with the Oilers in the 2015-16 season, appearing in a handful of games. Though he wasn’t able to secure a permanent spot on the Oilers roster, his experience provided valuable exposure to the highest level of professional hockey. He continued to contribute significantly to the Bakersfield Condors, becoming a key player on their blue line.

Seeking more consistent playing opportunities, LaLeggia ventured to Europe. He joined the KHL, playing for Kunlun Red Star and later for Spartak Moscow. The KHL offered a different style of play, emphasizing skill and offensive creativity, which suited LaLeggia’s strengths. He adapted well to the larger ice surface and continued to demonstrate his offensive capabilities. His time in the KHL provided a valuable experience and broadened his hockey horizons.

More recently, LaLeggia has found success in the DEL with EHC Red Bull München. He has quickly become an integral part of their team, contributing both offensively and defensively. His skating ability, puck-moving skills, and powerful shot make him a threat in all zones of the ice. He has consistently been a top-scoring defenseman for München and has helped the team compete for championships.
