Rick Derringer, born Ricky Zehringer on August 5, 1947, is an American rock guitarist, vocalist, songwriter, and producer whose career spans over five decades. His distinctive guitar sound and catchy songwriting have cemented his place in rock and roll history.

Derringer’s journey began in the early 1960s in Union City, Indiana, with his band, The McCoys. At just 17, they achieved international fame with their chart-topping hit, “Hang On Sloopy” in 1965. The song’s infectious melody and Derringer’s youthful energy catapulted them into the spotlight. Despite being a teen idol, Derringer was a serious musician with a genuine passion for rock and roll.

After The McCoys, Derringer worked extensively with Johnny Winter, contributing his guitar skills and production expertise to Winter’s albums. He also lent his talents to Edgar Winter’s band, White Trash, and later The Edgar Winter Group, contributing to hits like “Frankenstein” and “Free Ride.” Though uncredited for his guitar solo on “Frankenstein” it is a legendary piece of his guitar work.

In the 1970s, Derringer embarked on a successful solo career. His 1976 album, *All American Boy*, featured his signature song, “Rock and Roll, Hoochie Koo.” The song became a rock anthem and remains a staple on classic rock radio stations. Other notable solo albums include *Spring Fever* and *Guitars and Women*. He proved his songwriting ability with his solo works as well.

Beyond his solo work and collaborations, Derringer is a sought-after session musician and producer. He has worked with a diverse range of artists, including Steely Dan, Alice Cooper, Cyndi Lauper, Kiss, and Barbra Streisand. His versatility allows him to adapt to different musical styles while maintaining his distinct sound. He also played a key role in shaping the sound of Weird Al Yankovic’s early albums. He played guitar and bass on “Eat It” and “Like A Surgeon” and numerous other Weird Al songs.

Throughout his career, Rick Derringer has consistently demonstrated his musical talent and adaptability. From teenage pop sensation to seasoned rock veteran, his contributions to rock and roll are undeniable.
